Why Anything Matters

Why do we do anything? Why do we try?

I mean, in the realm of space and eternity and God, why does anything we do on earth matter?

I mean, even if we are of the mind that nothing on earth matters, just focus on going to heaven,

I still wonder, why want to go to heaven?

Why want to talk to God?

What does God want from us?

Ultimately, what is the purpose of existence??

I have a theory.

And it’s this.

It’s because there are some things—many things—that are only worth something if they were achieved in a finite existence.

It’s like when Jesus said, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.” (John 20:29)

Because if you see and then believe, it’s worth LESS than if you heard and then believed.

I mean, why did Jesus come and live in the form that had limited knowledge?

Why?

He had the clearest connection to God the Father and God the Holy Spirit.

But He never walked around with infinite knowledge.

In fact, God would reveal things to him.

When we go to heaven, we will know everything.

Everything about God and about ourselves:

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

1 Cor 13:12

So when we go to heaven…

Learning? Has no meaning. We already know everything.

Work? Has no profit. We already have everything.

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

Ecc 9:10

Work and learning, knowing God and building character —These things only come with reward for their worth because they were attained in a space where there were limitations.

Obtaining something only feels rewarding if there is some limiting factor.

It’s like how love from someone only means something if they have the capacity to hate or if they have the choice to love something else.

This may be why angels were not a solution for God’s companionship.

Angels know everything about God. So the options for angels were extreme: hold fast forever or reject forever.

We have the ability to waver in the middle, to be drawn towards and away.

There’s a freedom there (which is an interesting thought for further exploration some other time).

But in order for man’s love for God to be true and real, it had to be attained in ignorance, with little knowledge, with limiting factors of a finite mind.

I often feel like I wish I understood God.

But if I did, if I fully understood, I would then be doubly, triply responsible for my actions going forward.

And I believe that’s why only people who have seen the depths of the truth of God and His kingdom have the ability to commit the unpardonable sin.

So now I got it.

I know why I need to move fast.

I know why I need to study the word and focus on my relationship with the Lord

I know why I need to achieve as much as I can in this life.

Because it’s only worth something if I do it in this life.

I finally get it.

You know, I just now realized God only let me ponder this question when I was able to answer it.

Before, I had a deep desire to do a lot and achieve a lot just in me.

I believe now that was God-given and important in order to keep me moving forward until I could understand this concept.

It’s like when children are taught to obey and made to submit to authority until they are old enough to comprehend why.

I think that it’s the same way that God gives us desires to do things that we don’t understand until he is able to reveal why.

To parents, a child’s obedience is precious when they do it blindly.

It’s precious because they don’t understand why they ought to, but they do it.

I feel it might be the same with God.

Our obedience before knowing is more precious than our obedience after knowing.

Perhaps that is why he has set up the system to be “believe to see.”

That belief is more precious than anything.

Why?

Because it will make us into a greater type of person than otherwise would have been possible.
