Hacks Don't Slap
* * *
When are we gonna stop looking for hacks and start looking for principles?
I swear it’s a modern-day addiction.
This idea became even more real to me after picking up piano again.
After following Audrey Lo (a pianist and X-growth guru) on X for a while, I found my desire to improve my piano skills rekindled.
But I was intimidated (and low-key traumatized) by my past experiences.
I first started piano at 8 years old.
It was obligatory at first, but I actually grew to enjoy it.
In fact, I was quite good at it.
There was one problem.
My ears were faster than my eyes.
I developed a nasty habit of memorizing songs before I learned how to read them.
I could hear a song played once or twice and be able to pick at the keyboard until I could play by myself.
Some people would call that a talent, but to me, it was a curse.
It held me back to the point where for years I never developed my ability to read notes.
I had a hack.
I impressed my teachers, of course.
But I always new the truth and felt really guilty about it.
Years passed and I felt more and more like an imposter.
“Play piano?” Sure…I can “play” piano.
No. I just had a hack.
And well into my adulthood, I still had that problem, that horrid talent.
I felt like I couldn’t progress to harder music if I couldn’t read notes.
I eventually fell off and put my piano away to collect dust…
Fast forward to the present day and I pick up piano again after being inspired.
I did a Google search on how to read notes and found a landmark system that gave me more progress in five minutes than I had in 5 months of practice years before.
It wasn’t mastery immediately of course, but I could see the light at the end of the tunnel.
I’m not satisfied to just play a pretty song for a moment. I’m in it for the long-term gain.
I want to learn the skill of note-reading so that any song would be within my reach.
Folks, it’s the same when it comes to business, the game, this life.
We don’t want to just know the hack that will serve us in one specific situation or platform or medium.
If that’s the goal, we would always be restarting when the new and improved came along.
We want to learn the principles behind it all so that we can figure out our own hacks and feed ourselves indefinitely.
This is what thought leaders like Dan Koe and Alex Hormozi mean when they teach you the overall concept for winning and don’t give you the nitty gritty.
If you can stop and chew on the concept until you get, you’ll have a weapon that can take down almost anything that comes your way.
You win when you learn the principle.
Because while hacks change every day, principles don’t.
Learn the principle, and use it for life.
That’s infinite ROI.
Isn’t that worth it?
